Love in the outdoors

Every year, we travel throughout Quebec to explore the many different offerings of outfitters across the province—from Gaspé to Gatineau, from Thetford Mines to the Caniapiscau Reservoir, and passing through Mauricie, the Côte-Nord and the Monts-Valin. We’re always excited to see how they strive to offer the best possible outdoor experience to customers. Our job is simple: to showcase all these spectacular establishments and services. Along the way, I often wonder who are the lucky ones: the outfitters themselves, living in such superb settings, or those of us who come to visit and share their passion for a while.

A special experience

As I’ve always said, the best things you bring back from an outfitter stay are great experiences and lasting memories. It’s about enjoying good times together and sharing tall tales. Added to that is the joy of being surrounded by magnificent scenery, observing wildlife and feeling a deep connection with nature.

We have visited various regions and stayed in many different types of accommodation. With over 350 outfitters in Quebec, there’s certainly something for every taste and budget, and there are so many different adventures to be had. One that stands out in my memory was an all-women’s fishing stay at Pourvoirie du Club BataramThis link will open in a new window. This outfitter in Charlevoix is a true gem where fun times and the making of new friendships are guaranteed. Also, it features a large cabin that can accommodate over ten people.

Friendship, respect and admiration

Yes, outfitters are places where friendships can be formed through the experiences you share together. And often the bonds you develop are with the outfitter owners or their staff. That’s the case with many of the outfitters we have visited.

Their resourcefulness never ceases to amaze us. One day they’re mechanics, the next they’re refrigeration experts, plumbers and more! Outfitters have to be able to fix their own equipment since replacement parts are often a six-hour drive away. For example, when winter comes, Karine and Dany from Pourvoirie Lac DuMoulinThis link will open in a new window have to wait for the lake to freeze over before they can reach civilization. And there’s also the business side of things! Take Lea from Pourvoirie du Lac OscarThis link will open in a new window, for example. She manages an immense wildlife territory single-handedly. The dedication and resilience of all these outfitter owners and their staff deserve great respect.

We’ve also been able to see close-up the passion that drives these outfitters. Such is the case with our friends Denis and Laurel, who have owned and managed Domaine du Lac BrysonThis link will open in a new window with great passion for 31 years. That same enthusiasm inspired Jérémy to fulfill his dream of owning Pourvoirie Clauparo iThis link will open in a new windown the Monts-Valin and brothers Serge and Sylvain Danis to run Domaine ShannonThis link will open in a new window. Whatever the individual story, it always comes down to a real passion for what they’re doing.

Where love meets adventure

For many creatures of the forest, fall is mating season. The cooler air and vibrant colours set the stage for romance. And maybe the same applies to TV hosts!

A few years ago, I got to film my first field segments with Martin Bourget at Pourvoirie des Lacs Roger et Faucille in Charlevoix. The fall fishing was fabulous! The cabins there—perfect for small groups—offer a warm retreat when it gets cool. The fall colours on the surrounding mountains were breathtaking. Anyway, that week, sparks flew, and not only around the campfire.

Something special was happening between Martin and me at the outfitter. We discovered a shared passion for our work—hunting and fishing—and for each other.

Then, a year later at Pourvoirie Monts-Valin du ArcherThis link will open in a new window during an unforgettable moose hunt, something else happened. ACP hadn’t had much hunting luck in recent years, but on this particular trip, a beautiful bull moose appeared at a spot carefully prepared by my guide—none other than Martin. The moose had a magnificent 30-inch set of antlers. For us, it was the trophy of a lifetime, not just because of the hunt itself but because of the emotions tied to it. When we finally found the moose, I literally jumped into Martin’s arms, and we embraced. Any lingering doubts vanished: we were officially a couple! That moment became a milestone for us, marking both an unforgettable harvest and the beginning of our love story. And it all started at an outfitter!

Quebec outfitters have so much to offer. The warm welcome, meaningful connections and unforgettable experiences are what attract visitors to these wildlife-rich territories. Quebec outfitters are known for their hospitality. That classic phrase “Make yourself at home” is not just a saying here; it’s a way of life. Our outfitters offer more than just hunting and fishing; they enable you to build ties and create memories that will last a lifetime.

So... a big thank you to our outfitters for your dedication. Here’s to a long and thriving future for Quebec outfitters!
