Spring is an exciting time for walleye and northern pike anglers eagerly awaiting their first days on the water. Long before the summer vacation season begins, Baskatong Reservoir reveals a completely different side of itself. Less traffic, a peaceful atmosphere, and excellent fishing make it the perfect time to discover this vast body of water.
With that in mind, we headed to Chez Rainville—Camping Union Baskatong, located in Grand-Remous, Outaouais, for a three-day stay in the heart of the famous reservoir. Easily accessible via Road 117 and located approximately one hour from Mont-Laurier, the outfitter offers a wide range of accommodations and services to suit every type of visitor. Ready? Let’s get started.

Enjoy It Your Way—With or Without Your Own Equipment
Since we had our own setup, including a truck camper and a 16-foot aluminum boat, we opted for a full-service campsite, which proved to be a particularly affordable option.
The property is well designed for self-sufficient anglers, featuring a boat launch that is available free of charge to guests staying for three nights or more. It is also possible to rent a dock slip at the marina, with or without electricity, to keep your boat conveniently moored throughout your stay.

And what can we say about the stunning reservoir view directly from our campsite? It’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day on the water, drink in hand, while watching the sun set behind the mountains. Simply paradise.

For those who do not own a boat or who would like to invite friends to join them, the outfitter also rents 16-foot boats equipped with 25-horsepower motors. We recommend bringing an electric trolling motor and battery to make fishing easier and maximize your experience. A pontoon boat is also available for rent if you prefer extra comfort and stability while exploring this immense reservoir.
As for accommodations, the outfitter offers a variety of cottages, several of which have been recently renovated. Some overlook the water, while others are tucked away in more secluded, wooded areas. Featuring modern amenities such as hot water, electricity, and Wi-Fi access (perfect for telework), these cottages provide a comfortable getaway. Simply bring your bedding and towels—everything else is supplied.

Finding the Best Fishing Spots
Baskatong Reservoir is home to more than 35 species, including landlocked salmon, but it is particularly famous for its walleye and northern pike fishing. With over 413 km² of water, there is certainly no shortage of fishing spots—you simply need to find the right one.
In spring, walleye primarily spawn in the Gatineau River before gradually moving back into the main reservoir as water temperatures rise. The outfitter provides a map highlighting the main spawning sanctuaries. This can help you identify nearby points and structures that often produce excellent fishing results.

To help locate the hottest fishing areas, we highly recommend stopping at the Baskatong Reservoir Community Wildlife Area (Aire faunique communautaire du réservoir Baskatong AFC Baskatong) on your way to the outfitter. There, you can visit the Yellow Walleye Interpretation Centre, open Monday through Friday from June to August, and speak with knowledgeable staff who can share current fishing conditions, tips, and local insights.
It is also at the AFC office—or through their website—that you can purchase your daily, weekly, or annual fishing authorization at a very reasonable cost. Once you have this authorization and a valid fishing licence, your adventure on the legendary Baskatong Reservoir can begin.
During our spring visit, perch-pattern crankbaits as well as jigs tipped with nightcrawlers and leeches produced excellent results. In just a few hours, we were able to appreciate both the healthy walleye population and the effective management of the fishery. Back at camp, there

What You Should Know Before Your First Trip to Baskatong Reservoir
If you are new to fishing Baskatong Reservoir, May and June are ideal months to visit, as fish tend to respond well to a wide variety of presentations.
Due to its immense size, the reservoir is often subject to rapidly changing weather conditions. Anglers should always proceed with caution, as strong winds can quickly create surprisingly large waves. Floating timber may also be present on or just below the surface, depending on water levels.
During our visit, water levels were exceptionally high—higher than many locals had seen in years. A sonar unit proved invaluable, providing information on water depth and fish locations while helping us navigate the vast network of islands and channels. It was also extremely useful for finding our way back to camp.
A large reservoir map is displayed at reception, and detailed maps can be purchased at the outfitter’s con
Plenty of Activities and Services
Between fishing outings, guests can enjoy a variety of activities on site. A federated ATV trail is accessible less than 500 metres from the outfitter. Pedal boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are also available for rent. A hiking trail passes near the entrance, making it easy to stretch your legs after several hours on the water.

Forgot something? No problem. The outfitter offers bedding rentals as well as a well-stocked convenience store to meet your needs.
You also won’t want to miss the snack bar and its beautiful terrace overlooking Baskatong Reservoir. Breakfast is available, along with a varied menu featuring burgers, pizzas, submarines, and more.

Why Visit During the Off-Season?
At Chez Rainville—Camping Union Baskatong, the off-season runs from mid-May to mid-June and from mid-August to mid-October, excluding Labour Day and Thanksgiving weekends.
An off-season stay offers several advantages, including a quieter atmosphere, both at the property and on the reservoir itself. Guests can also enjoy discounts of up to 25% on weekday stays.
As a bonus, the late spring delayed the arrival of mosquitoes, which were completely absent during our visit.
Abundant fish, quality services, affordable rates, and prime fishing conditions—it’s hard to ask for more.
