World class hunting and fishing destination, Abitibi-Témiscamingue

20 March 2019

It is not without reason that people in Abitibi-Témiscamingue talk about fishing and hunting year-round. A young, sparsely populated region abounding in forests, lakes and rivers, Abitibi-Témiscamingue offers a vast and bountiful playground to hunting and fishing enthusiasts.

From boreal forest in the north to mixed forest in the south, the forested land of Abitibi-Témiscamingue is home to a large number of small and big game species. The immensity of the area provides moose, bear and other large fauna the perfect habitat for feeding, shelter and mating, and the many forest roads make our forested land easily accessible.

When autumn arrives and our colorful forests are at their peak of beauty, the region welcomes 34% of all non-resident hunters from all over Quebec to track moose, the king of our forests; the well-advised call upon the services of professionals to increase their chances of success. And it really pays off!

If more than 17% of all bears harvested during the hunting season across Quebec come from Abitibi-Témiscamingue’s game-rich forests, it is because non-resident black bear hunters have known for a fact for many years that our outfitters and guides are knowledgeable in their craft. Each spring, from mid-May to late June, they lure the most elusive bears to their bait. In the 2018 hunting season, black bear hunting clients in our member outfitting operations had an average success rate of 76%.

Abitibi-Témiscamingue is a spacious land of lakes: one lake to seven inhabitants.  Nine of those lakes are true inland seas of freshwater covering an area of more than 100 km², and thousands of lakes are disseminated here and there; many of them are in the forest. The waters of Abitibi-Témiscamingue drain into many northward and southward flowing rivers of the province.

With its many lakes and rivers, Abitibi-Témiscamingue is known as a fishing paradise. Each year, our region welcomes assiduous and faithful customers from all over, including Ontario and the United States. If walleye is always a favorite for shore lunches, our visitors enjoy the challenge of fly-fishing for northern pike, many of which attain impressive sizes. Lake trout, smallmouth bass and brook trout are other sports fish species that anglers from Ontario and the United States find in any of our outfitters. This abundance and diversity of aquatic fauna have made the reputation of Abitibi-Témiscamingue outfitters, which alone welcome nearly half of anglers from the United States and Ontario using the services of an outfitter in Quebec.

Our outfitters are proud to welcome tourists in their comfortable inn or lodges and provide them with top notch services and equipment.

If you wish to live a hunting or fishing experience to match your expectations, in a natural, accessible and quiet environment, call upon the services of Abitibi-Témiscamingue outfitters. One thing is certain: when you leave, you will want to return again and again!
