Welcome to the Outaouais

1 March 2019

Have you heard about our contest, «Win a Fishing Trip in the Outaouais?»

Visit one (or more!) of our participating outfitters and you could win a Princecraft Scamper fishing boat, complete with a 9.9-hp four-stroke Mercury outboard motor and a trailer (total value $7,000 CDN).

Welcome to the Outaouais

Looking for a corner of paradise where you can expect (and, more to the point, land) some exceptional catches? Welcome to the Outaouais! With its 15,000 lakes, two huge reservoirs, fish-filled rivers and vast wilderness, it has everything you need to enjoy an abundant natural playground right next door to the nation’s capital.

An ideal location

Less than 200 km from Montreal, directly across the river from Ottawa, the Outaouais offers an ideal combination of natural beauty and urban attractions. On the natural side, 80% of the 33,000-km2 territory is forested. The two reservoirs, Baskatong and Cabonga, and dozens of rivers are home to an impressive variety of fish species. Fishers, hunters, and the family members who accompany them are sure to take home good memories of their experience in the Outaouais. True stories that stay in your heart forever!

Have you ever hunted black bear? Well known among our American neighbours, the sport is gaining popularity in the province, and the Outaouais stands out for the quality of this hunt. Why? Because our outfitters work hard to attract these animals. Several weeks in advance, bait is laid and hides are set up in preparation for the arrival of the hunters. What region can claim an almost 90% success rate? You guessed it: the Outaouais!

Moose and white-tailed deer are also prized in the region. Thanks to rigorous management, the population of these two cervids is thriving.

As for small game, woodcock, ruffed grouse and hare are abundant, and you’re more than likely to run into a flock of wild turkeys!

With its impressive variety of bodies of water, the Outaouais is truly a fisher’s paradise. Rely on our outfitters for the best advice for successful fishing and direct access to the region’s natural bounty. Looking for variety? You can fish walleye, sauger, pike, whitefish, rainbow trout, speckled trout, brown trout, Arctic char, brook trout, splake (a cross of brook trout and lake trout), lake sturgeon, bass, landlocked salmon, muskellunge, lake trout and yellow perch. At some outfitters, you can even fish four species in a single day—the Grand Slam of fishing!

Popular catches include the feisty pike and bass, as well as the imposing (and delicious) walleye. They are found in abundance in the local rivers.

To stack the odds in favour of catching your dinner, rely on your outfitter’s expertise. Lodging, boat, motor and guides: you’re all set for an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

In winter, many outfitters offer ice fishing, and some have all-inclusive packages.

A little R&R

Outfitters aren’t just for hunters and fishers: they’re also great for vacations with family or friends. From beaches, kayaks, rowboats and campfires to inflatable water games and skeet shooting, each Outaouais outfitter has its own unique appeal. Welcome to our region!

And if you venture beyond the edge of the forest …

While you’re in the area, why not check out some of the Outaouais’ more urban attractions? Visit our national museums, including the Canadian Museum of History; enjoy a meal at one of the fine restaurants in Old Hull and Old Aylmer; try your luck at the Casino du Lac-Leamy; or relax at Nordik Spa-Nature, the largest spa in North America.
