> Hunting methods

This type of hunting, whose enthusiasts are often passionate, uses a projectile weapon; it requires many hours of practice, although the crossbow is easier to master and, therefore, more popular. Crossbow hunting is gaining popularity in Quebec, mainly due to recent modifications to the hunting regulations allowing both crossbow and bow hunting seasons for large game. The accurate range of both weapons is about 50 meters.
This type of weapon includes the shotgun and the rifle. Shotguns are used for small game and migratory bird hunting since they shoot a spray of shot or slugs with a maximum accurate range of 50 meters. Rifles shoot a single projectile over longer distances and with greater velocity and accuracy; their strike force enables effective hunting of large game.
Also known as a muzzleloader, this weapon resembles old-style hunting rifles used by the first settlers of New France. Its accurate range is somewhat restricted, loading takes considerable time and it shoots single projectiles. For the hunter, this ups the challenge and, for the game, the likelihood of escaping is increased. In Quebec, black powder rifles are used mostly for white-tailed deer, and only within a designated season.
The various breeds of hunting dogs are the result of longtime, worldwide genetic selection for specific traits relating to performing certain tasks in a variety of situations. They include retrievers specialized to fetch the game, pointers with a keen sense of smell used to find and indicate the location of the animal, scent dogs to locate and track game and bloodhounds able to track injured animals. The world of dog hunting includes some of the most passionate hunters.
An outfitter hunting guide is a professional whose role is to accompany guests while hunting. The guide is responsible for guests’ security at all times, ensures that weapons are in good working condition and have accurate aim, brings guests to areas most likely to harbor their preferred game, offers instruction and advice to maximize hunting success, attends to gutting and preserving of game, ensures the transmittal of catch data to the outfitter and administers first aid in case of accidents.
