Fishing - Splake in Quebec's Outfitters

Identification

Body shape :  Intermediate between brook trout and lake trout; tail slightly forked, less forked than in lake trout.

Average size :  25 to 46 cm (10 to 18 in)

 

Coloration :   Tricolored fins; dark body with pale spots; some red spotting but lacking blue halo.

External characteristics :  A brook trout/lake trout hybrid that is difficult to identify externally since it resembles both parent species; positive identification possible only by counting pyloric caeca (finger-like projections of the intestine): 65 to 85 in splake, 23 to 55 in brook trout, 93 or more in lake trout.
